"The worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful."(Matthew 13:22)

Anchoring Story

"Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants."(Matthew 13:7)

Jesus explained

"The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful."(Matthew 13:22)

My mother often reminded me, “The only thing worse than waiting on God is wishing you had!” We know that the devil rushes, while God guides. A heart overwhelmed by the anxieties of life will often find itself toiling, rushing, and distracted, struggling under the weight of cares and caught in the pursuit of things that fade.

The preoccupied heart hears the Word but is choked by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth. Here, the thorns grow—fear of scarcity, preoccupation with status, the temptation of a life built on accumulation. When we live preoccupied, we unknowingly allow distractions to take root and rob us of the peace that surpasses understanding.

God doesn’t resist blessing us, but the blessing must come from Him—not from our endless pursuit of more. True wealth is a heart that has rested in the peace of God’s plan, content and whole in the calling He has given.

Journal Prompt

Identify the thorns in your life that are choking out God’s Word. What changes can you make to refocus on Him?

Heart Meditation Scriptures

  1. Matthew 6:33"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

  2. 1 Peter 5:7"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

Heart Renewal Proclamation

"Father, I release the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of riches. I seek first Your kingdom and righteousness. Let Your Word flourish in me, unhindered."

Closing Reflection

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, His love is as oil poured over wounds, healing the places that have been forgotten.

Some changes in the heart are painful but necessary. Our tears and brokenness draw God near. He is close to those with broken spirits and contrite hearts, and it is this closeness we long for. Sometimes, God allows the breaking of our hearts to save our souls, leading us into the fullness of His love.

Let us move through it with God, allowing Him to love our hearts into full freedom and fertile ground. The harvest of 30, 60, 100-fold comes when we overcome the distractions of life and anchor ourselves in His promises.
