Growing up, I’d often hear my grandma talk about “going into her closet to talk to God.” At first, I didn’t think much of it. But every now and then, she’d ask me to go grab her slippers. Dutifully, I’d slide open the closet door and reach for the slippers sitting right at the edge of her impossibly packed closet, then hurry back to deliver them. But as I walked back, the question would always linger in my mind, "How does she possibly get in there? There’s literally no room!"
One day, curiosity got the better of me. With a bit of nerve, I asked, “Granny, how do you get in the closet? And why do you have to talk to God in there?”
She looked at me, smiling, and with a depth I didn’t fully grasp at the time, she answered, “The closet I enter isn’t a small wooden fixture. It’s the space I hold in my heart that only God and I can enter. ‘Thy word have I hidden in my heart,’” she quoted. “I enter my secret place and dwell with God whenever and wherever I bow my head.”
Back then, her words felt like a mystery I’d never solve. But as I’ve grown, I understand it now more than ever. Our “closet” doesn’t need to be confined to four walls or a particular place. It’s a sanctuary within your heart, an intimate space that allows you to pray, worship and commune with God, no matter where you are.
Now, I find myself in that same place, needing to connect with my Father at any moment of the day. I don’t need to be physically in a closet or even kneeling at the foot of my bed with my hands tightly clasped. The act of coming before God doesn’t require a specific position or place—it only requires intention. So whether I bow my head in quiet prayer or lift my hands to the heavens in the “Ascension Flow”, I am “in my closet,” alone with the Most High—the Lover of My Soul, the Captain of my Sea.
Thank you, Lord, for always seeing me, always hearing me, and giving me unlimited access to You.
